The beautiful setting

It was a lovely sunny day – the setting was spectacular, Atlanta came up the aisle with Lottie the dog as ring bearer. Atlanta and Luke’s humanist wedding ceremony began with a traditional Scottish Rabbie Burns poem.

Their story

I then recounted how they met:

‘Atlanta and Luke met on Atlanta’s favourite night of the year, Halloween, in a dodgy Dumfries nightclub whilst him in a sombrero and her as Alice in Wonderland. Their eyes met from balcony to floor and from here their relationship grew. Luke courted Atlanta with the aid of Lottie (that’s their dog) and since they met they haven’t gone a day without speaking’. Atlanta and Luke immediately bonded over their love for quiet nights in watching Lord of the Rings and eating Dominos pizza!

This was their engagement story that was told in their humanist wedding ceremony: ‘Luke really brought out his romantic side in his endeavour to propose to Atlanta. Having sought the permission of her parents he took Atlanta to the spot in front of Edinburgh Castle, where he first told her he loved her, bent the knee and asked for her hand in marriage. Now as romantic as that sounds I should point out that the special ‘romantic’ spot in front of Edinburgh Castle in which we speak of is actually part of a multi-story car park.’

What they said about their humanist wedding ceremony

Atlanta and Luke had this to say about their ceremony: “Our humanist wedding ceremony was truly ours, unique to us and something which won’t happen again. We were able to put words into our vows that really meant something to us, including a few inside jokes, as well as have close friends and family be a part of our ceremony. We had so many lovely comments from our guests, telling us they’d never been to a ceremony quite like it!

We particularly enjoyed our personal vows, and the handfasting within our humanist wedding ceremony. These are both something we really wanted and it made our ceremony so personal to us, whilst bringing in some ancient traditions. We now have our handfast in a frame in our dining room, which we love!”

Caroline was such a wonderful humanist celebrant! We spoke to a few celebrants prior to Caroline, but knew as soon as we spoke with her that she’d be perfect for our ceremony. Caroline was very relaxed, friendly and so helpful – both in the lead-up and on the day.
